The Craft Behind MEKO: Why We Choose Wood

Before a MEKO toy reaches a child's hands, it begins with a piece of wood.

There is something about wood that we have always loved.

It feels warm. It has weight. You can see its grain, feel its texture and sometimes even notice little differences from one piece to another.

And unlike something that comes perfectly identical every time, wood has a character of its own.

That's one of the reasons we chose it for MEKO.

Why wood?

When we started exploring wooden toys, we were drawn to their simplicity.

Wood doesn't need much to become something interesting.

A few carefully shaped pieces can become a tower, a bridge, a house or whatever a child happens to imagine that day.

But for us, choosing wood was not only about how it looks.

We wanted to create toys that feel real in a child's hands.

Something they can pick up, move around, stack, balance and explore.

Made here, with Indian craftsmanship

One of the reasons we started MEKO was the desire to create something in India that we could be proud of.

So making our toys here matters to us.

Behind every MEKO toy are people who know how to work with wood — shaping, sanding, assembling and finishing each piece.

There is a lot more work involved than what you see when you finally hold the finished toy.

A shape that looks simple can take many steps to get right.

The proportions have to work.

The edges need to feel right in little hands.

The pieces need to fit together properly.

And the finish needs to bring out the character of the wood without taking away from it.

The little things matter

When you're making something for children, details that might seem small to someone else matter to us.

How does this piece feel when you pick it up?

Is the shape comfortable to hold?

Does it balance the way it should?

Can the pieces be used together in more than one way?

Will the toy still be interesting after the first few minutes?

We spend a lot of time thinking about these questions.

Because good design isn't always about adding more.

Sometimes it's about getting the small things right.

Crafted by nature, finished by hand

Wood is a natural material, and we don't want to hide that.

You may notice slight differences in grain, colour, texture or finish between two pieces of the same toy.

That's not a mistake.

It's part of the material.

It's also part of what makes a handcrafted toy feel different from something that has been produced to look exactly the same a thousand times over.

Every piece has a little bit of its own character.

From an idea to a toy

A MEKO toy usually starts much earlier than the workshop.

It might begin with a conversation between us.

A sketch.

A shape we keep coming back to.

Or simply a question:

“What could a child do with this?”

From there, the idea gets tested, changed and tested again.

We think about how it will be made, how it will feel, how the pieces will work together and, most importantly, what possibilities it gives a child.

Only then does the idea slowly become a real toy.

We don't want perfect. We want thoughtful.

There's a difference.

Perfect means every piece looks exactly the same.

Thoughtful means someone cared about how it was made.

At MEKO, we're more interested in the second.

We want our toys to carry the warmth of wood, the skill of the people who make them and the thought that went into designing them.

Something that feels good to give.

Something that feels good to receive.

And something a child can keep coming back to.

The craft is part of the story

For us, Indian craftsmanship isn't something we want to put on a label and leave there.

It's part of why MEKO exists.

We started because we wanted to make something here that we could be proud of.

Today, we're still learning how to do that better — working with our makers, refining our designs and paying attention to the details that make a toy feel just right.

Because every MEKO toy carries more than a design.

It carries the material, the maker and the idea that started it.

And then it becomes something else entirely when it reaches a child.

A tower.

A bridge.

A little house.

A new adventure.

That's the beautiful part.
