The Story Behind MEKO TOYS

MEKO started with a thought that had been somewhere in the back of my mind for years.

I was working at my dad’s gift shop, where we sold gifts and toys. Spending so much time around toys, I started noticing something — almost everything on the shelves was made in China. And the Indian toys I came across were mostly cheap plastic toys that didn’t feel very exciting.

I always had this little wish to make something of our own. Something made in India that we could be proud of.

But life happened, and that thought slowly got lost.

After the lockdown, things changed. The market was slow, customers had moved to online shopping, and I started looking for something new to build. I travelled to different manufacturing hubs across India, looking at different businesses and trying to figure out what I could do.

For a while, I thought I had found my answer in the bearing industry. I spent time researching it and even started imagining what it could become. But the deeper I went, the more I realised how far it was from what I knew — it needed a lot of capital, technology and specialised expertise.

I was sitting at home, quite stressed and honestly a little lost, when my wife reminded me of something I had forgotten myself.

“You’ve been around your dad’s business all your life. Why don’t you do something you already understand?”

That conversation brought back that old feeling.

We started talking about toys.

Then we started researching them.

And the more we looked, the more we found ourselves drawn to wooden toys — the material, the simplicity, the possibilities and the opportunity to make something thoughtfully here in India.

That’s where MEKO began.

Since then, we’ve been building it together.

We’re learning as we go, figuring things out one product at a time.

MEKO is still young. But that original thought that started all of this is still the same:

We wanted to make something in India that we could be proud of.

And hopefully, something that becomes a small part of many childhoods along the way.

CRAFTED FOR CHILDHOOD TO UNFOLD.
